A Guide To Tether Cables

Not all cables are created equal and none are perfect. Some camera/ computer combinations will cause more issues than others. Please feel free to reach out about specific questions and use cases.

All of our rentals currently come with Area51 Cables.

That does not mean these are the only options available. As a working digital tech service, we use what is available and tested at the time and these have proven to be long lasting and durable alternatives to the classic Tether Tools cables.

Tether Cable Brands To Consider:

Some tips and tricks for a tethered workflow:

  • Always have backups, you never know when a cable might die

  • Turn off charging from computer via USB in the camera

  • When in trouble, introduce a USB-A connection in the mix

    • This can help deal with USB PD issues by defaulting to a more basic standard

  • Use an externally powered dock to avoid power sharing issues among your computer ports

  • The longer the cable, the more time it will take to get the image to the computer

    • Optical USB cables are the exception to this
